These days we really have to watch what we eat. We are counting calories, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, sugar. WOW its amazing that we can eat anything at all. In chapter 2 we will be talking about the chemistry of life. This is all the little building blocks that are responsible for making our tissues, organs, and keep our body functioning each day.
The thought is that you replenish what you are using up each day by eating. Some of us (myself included) tend to take in more than we use up during a day and we are storing up these nutrient molecules in our bodies like a savings account. Others who are very active like athletes will burn up these nutrients and need to take in more and get them more often. These building blocks that I am referring to are molecules called macro-molecules or biological molecules and there are 4 main types. You have seen three of the four on most food labels. Check out the nutritional label on your box of cereal in the morning while you are crunching away.
The first are proteins. They are polymers, long chains, made of small subunits called amino acids. The second are fats (polymers)made of monomer subunits called fatty acids. The last type are called carbohydrates. They are polymers made of monomer subunits called sugars. Nucleic Acids are the fourth type and they are made of monomers called nucleotides. So my question to you tonight is what types of the 4 biological molecules are you taking in the most? Proteins, Carbohydrates, or Fats? What types of foods are you eating to get them? Please respond with a full comment, first name and period to get credit. Happy snacking.
